Again, this was a substantial commitment, notionally 4,000 men. There should possibly be a fort on the Clyde to complete the line in the south; the Rock of Dumbarton would be a possibility. Arguably, however, Barochan – high above the Clyde on the south side – performed this role. In addition, the fortress at Inchtuthil itself covers the major route of the Tay Valley.

The traditional explanation of these is that they are ‘glen-blocking’ forts designed to protect the occupied territory. In contrast to the Gask Ridge, these are generally standard-sized forts. Was such a substantial force really just for defensive purposes, sited simply to block invasion or raiding routes, as the descriptor ‘glen-blocking’ implies, or did it have an aggressive purpose? The Roman Army of the Flavian era was on an expansion mission to complete the conquest of Britain. During the 70s, Roman forces had completed the conquest of Wales, Northern England and the Scottish Lowlands: why would they stop now?
